Should You Practice Yoga During Your Fertility Treatment?

Having to undergo fertility treatments can be a big struggle for many couples. To alleviate some of this despair, yoga can be a holistic and magnificent way to reduce stress and find a balance between your body, spirit, and mind. Many research studies have proved that practicing yoga regularly can enhance your chances of getting pregnant, especially during fertility treatments.

Yoga During Your Fertility Treatment

How Should You Practice Yoga During Your Fertility Treatment?

Regular Yoga Practice Alleviates Stress

When you are undergoing treatment during an IVF cycle, you may experience a lot of anxiety about the outcome. After all, you want this treatment to be a success. To overcome much of this anxiety, you can practice Yin style yoga. This nourishes your mind, body, and spirit while relieving much of the stress you’re likely experiencing. It is recommended that you start with a moderate intensity yoga routine. Avoid high-intensity types of yoga practices such as hot yoga, vinyasa, power, and Ashtanga yoga. If possible, discuss whether yoga is a good option for you with your fertility specialist.

Yoga Practice Before the Treatment

In the days and months that lead up to the start of the IVF cycle, reduce the amount of high-intensity yoga that you perform. Opt for something that is less forceful. Avoid postures that require jumping, twisting, inversions, forward and backward bending. The goal is to breathe evenly and steadily while reducing the amount of sweat. It is beneficial to practice pranayama at this time.

Yoga Practice During the IVF Cycle

Once your IVF cycle has commenced, you must practice a gentle yoga routine. You may perform soft pranayama, visualization exercises, meditation, and mindfulness.

On the day of your scheduled egg retrieval, practice pranayama or mindful meditation. On the day of the embryo transfer, continue practicing pranayama or meditation but refrain from physical yoga exercise in the days that follow.

Yoga is a beneficial exercise for couples seeking fertility treatment. Not only does it effectively deal with stress, but it helps you focus on your inner well-being. Before commencing any yoga routine, speak to your fertility specialist.
