Surrogate mothers wear many hats. She often has a full-time career, which she balances with taking care of her own family. Also, she must juggle numerous domestic roles. When giving birth to someone’s baby, the level of responsibility heightens even further. In light of all these obligations, a surrogate mother’s health is of the utmost concern.
She needs to remain healthy and fit while managing other areas of her life. This is a must if she wants to give birth to a healthy baby and recover quickly after childbirth.
The following tips will help every surrogate mother remain well throughout her surrogate pregnancy:
1. Stay Hydrated
Staying hydrated is very important. Doing so reduces the chances of tiredness, muscle fatigue, nausea, and morning sickness. There is also a clear link between staying hydrated and eating fewer unnecessary calories. The recommended daily intake should be up to 2 liters per day.
2. Consume Tasty and Healthy Foods
There are certain foods that a pregnant woman must include in her daily diet. These are:
- Omega 3 Fats and Lean Proteins- can be obtained from eggs, cold-water seafood such as wild salmon, anchovies, cod and clams, olive oil, avocados, flaxseed oil, beans, and tofu. Avoid farm-raised fish and sea fish such as tuna and marlin as these are high in methylmercury.
- Nuts- Nuts such as walnuts, almonds, pecans, and soy nuts are excellent and nutritious foods.
- Organic Produce- Always consume produce that is organically grown as this contains no pesticides. Consume ample amounts of green leafy vegetables, bananas, oranges, and apples. Always rinse thoroughly before consuming.
- High Fibre- Foods high in fiber such as wheat and wheat germ, steel-cut oats, rye, and other whole grains are excellent fiber sources.
3. Engage in Enjoyable Activities
It is essential to stay active but only engages in things that you enjoy and won’t harm you or the unborn child. Physical activities such as prenatal yoga, walking, and swimming are excellent options. Avoid high impact exercises such as aerobics, weight training, running, jogging (unless you are a seasoned jogger).
4. Wear Comfortable and Beautiful Clothing
When you’re pregnant, it’s hard to feel ‘pretty,’ significantly when your belly is expanding, and your ankles are swelling. This doesn’t mean you have to wear over-sized t-shirts and baggy clothing. Choose to clothe specifically designed for pregnancy, i.e., maternity wear. These are shaped and designed to suit expectant mothers. Also, store the high-heeled shoes for now. Consider wearing flats, kitten heels, or short platform shoes.
5. Keep Good Company
During pregnancy, it’s essential to have a circle of support. This is even more necessary during a surrogate pregnancy. Have regular conversations with your spouse, partner, best friend, or anyone you feel is a support source. Many surrogacy support groups can be beneficial at this particular time. Speak to your surrogacy agency if necessary.
