What To Expect During Egg Retrieval?

The process of egg retrieval is an essential step in your IVF journey. On this day, all your mature eggs will be harvested and fertilized into an embryo. Since egg retrieval is a medical procedure, it makes many women feel nervous.

To curb some of this anxiety, you need to know what to expect.

Egg Retrieval

Listed below are the steps you can anticipate on the day of egg retrieval:

Pre-Retrieval Process

On the day of the egg retrieval procedure, you will be requested to arrive early with photo identification. It is recommended you bring a chauffeur along who can drive you back home for further recovery. Your chauffeur must be a responsible adult of age 18 or older. He or she must accompany you to the appointment.

After conducting the necessary admission procedure, you will be prepped for the anesthesia procedure. In anesthesia, you will receive sedation so that you are completely relaxed during the egg retrieval process. You may be asked to refrain from eating or drinking anything post-midnight on the day before the procedure.

You will be asked to:
  • Wear loose and comfortable attire
  • Leave jewelry and accessories at home
  • Refrain from wearing cosmetics or scented products
Your doctor will expect you to be present for the appointment up to 90 minutes in advance before the procedure. After the necessary paperwork has been completed, a nurse anesthetist will start the sedation and pain medication administration procedure.

Egg-Retrieval Process

After you’ve received sufficient sedation, the doctor will commence with the egg retrieval process. Using an ultrasound as a guide, a special needle will be inserted into your vagina via the cervix and through to the ovary. After insertion, the doctor will retrieve your eggs one at a time from the follicles. In a majority of cases, the entire procedure will last for 20 minutes.

After the eggs are retrieved, they are placed in nutritive liquid. Here, they will be isolated and fertilized.

Post Egg Retrieval

After you awake from sedation and leave for home, it is recommended you take a few days off of work to recover. You may experience some pelvic or abdominal discomfort, but this is entirely normal.

You can expect to feel the following:
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Mild Pelvic Discomfort
If you experience severe cramping, pain or heavy bleeding after your egg retrieval procedure, please contact your doctor immediately.
